Summary

It’s the spring of 1969, and Lakshmi, now married to Dr。 Jay Kumar, directs the Healing Garden in Shimla。 Malik has finished his private school education。 At twenty, he has just met a young woman named Nimmi when he leaves to apprentice at the Facilities Office of the Jaipur Royal Palace。 Their latest project: a state-of-the-art cinema。

Malik soon finds that not much has changed as he navigates the Pink City of his childhood。 Power and money still move seamlessly among the wealthy class, and favors flow from Jaipur’s Royal Palace, but only if certain secrets remain buried。 When the cinema’s balcony tragically collapses on opening night, blame is placed where it is convenient。 But Malik suspects something far darker and sets out to uncover the truth。 As a former street child, he always knew to keep his own counsel; it’s a lesson that will serve him as he untangles a web of lies。

In New York Times bestselling author Alka Joshi’s intriguing new novel, henna artist Lakshmi arranges for her protégé, Malik, to intern at the Jaipur Palace in this tale rich in character, atmosphere, and lavish storytelling。

Audiobook。 Enjoyable sequel, I love getting insights into the Indian culture-something I know very little about。 Glad I listened because I would have mispronounced many words!

The Secret Keeper of Jaipur First of all - thank goodness this is a trilogy! I didn’t realise, until I got to the end, that there will be another。 Phew。 It’s like going on a cultural holiday with some really genuinely crafted characters。There’s so much to like about this series and this book - Lakshmi, Jay, Malik and Nimmi are a wonderful ‘family’ of sorts。 They teach each other life lessons, show what true love looks like - and like all good protagonists, keep the story moving along。 I loved th The Secret Keeper of Jaipur First of all - thank goodness this is a trilogy! Another great story by Alka Joshi and it was fun revisiting the familiar characters from The Henna Artist。

Wonderful follow up to The Henna Artist。

4。5 stars。 A wonderful book。 I liked the first one a little more, but the sequel had a good mystery tied in。 Alka Joshi is a very talented storyteller。

Nice to revisit with Lakshmi and Malik 12 years later。

This book picks up the characters from The Henna Artist twelve years after that book ended。 I recommend you read that first, but the author does a good job of filling the backstory in this book。 In both books the lives of rich (Maharanis) and poor ( shepherds) are contrasted。 Her story begins with a balcony collapse at the opening of a grand new theater in Jaipur, India, and the rest of the story is why it happened。

Roberta

Enjoyed the alternating points of view and the various narrators。 This was an amazing sequel to The Henna Artist。

Frankie

What a lovely sequel to this authors first book。 The bits of culture and descriptions of different peoples of India make this a richly decorated book, much like the designs so faithfully described in her first。 Totally satisfying read,

The saga of Lakshmi continues with Malik, this time focusing more on Malik。 Another jewel of a book。

I did enjoy the first book in this series more。 However, it is fun to see a continuation of characters and have a new storyline。

Honestly, again very predictable and a lot of times, in reading, there are parts that are overkill and have nothing to do with the story line。 I skipped the last maybe 25% of the book and just read maybe the last chapter or so and I legit didn't miss anything - that tells you something。 Honestly, again very predictable and a lot of times, in reading, there are parts that are overkill and have nothing to do with the story line。 I skipped the last maybe 25% of the book and just read maybe the last chapter or so and I legit didn't miss anything - that tells you something。 。。。more

Joshi does it again。 Her story telling is literally wonderful。 This was a beautiful way to return to the world and characters of The Henna Artist。

I really don't know why I forced myself to finish this。 I just did not care for anything that was happening in this book and the characters I cared for so much in the first book (Malik, Lakshmi, and Jay) I felt nothing for。 I was glad that Lakshmi and Jay are happy, and that we didn't have to deal with Radha in this book but that's where the positives end。 In fact, Radha is replaced by Nimmi who might just be even more insufferable than her。 The only difference being that Nimmi (although she doe I really don't know why I forced myself to finish this。 I just did not care for anything that was happening in this book and the characters I cared for so much in the first book (Malik, Lakshmi, and Jay) I felt nothing for。 I was glad that Lakshmi and Jay are happy, and that we didn't have to deal with Radha in this book but that's where the positives end。 In fact, Radha is replaced by Nimmi who might just be even more insufferable than her。 The only difference being that Nimmi (although she doesn't act like it) is a fully grown woman and not an impulsive 13-year-old。 The plot was boring, I did not care about what was going on, I felt no attachment to the characters (despite loving some of them in the past) and was just waiting for the audiobook to be over。 This book falls into the unnecessary sequel category for me。 It didn’t add anything to the original story。 Also, it was supposed to be Malik’s story and yet I feel like he does little to nothing of importance? I mean there’s little to nothing of importance in the entire book but that’s besides the point。 1 star because I can’t think of a single thing I enjoyed。 。。。more

A fun read, but it took me forever to finish it because of other things happening in my life。 Plot was good。 Loved ending。

This was an excellent book also。 The mystery on how the collapsed happened and how things changed for everyone。 The story was so sweet and I love the ending。 I’m hoping there will be a part 3。

Loved loved loved this sequel to The Henna Artist。 Great characters。

I loved the Henna Artist and this book was great as well。 It just took a little time for me to get into the story perhaps because it had been awhile since I read the first but the author does a great job reminding you of the plot/characters from the first and half way through I was hooked。

Another wonderful read。 Can’t wait for the third book in this trilogy。 Having been to Jaipur, the city comes alive to me again。 The characters once again are so well drawn。

While most of the same characters appear in this sequel to The Henna Artist, the underlying story did not capture me as much。 Malik who uses to follow Lakshimi around while she administered henna and herbs to the most prominent women of Jaipur is now an educated young man working as an intern learning the construction trade。 It is in this role that he starts to discover what may have causes the collapse of the new theater in Jaipur。 The story here however is less about the characters and more ab While most of the same characters appear in this sequel to The Henna Artist, the underlying story did not capture me as much。 Malik who uses to follow Lakshimi around while she administered henna and herbs to the most prominent women of Jaipur is now an educated young man working as an intern learning the construction trade。 It is in this role that he starts to discover what may have causes the collapse of the new theater in Jaipur。 The story here however is less about the characters and more about discovering answers, and for that reason, the story was not as interesting to me。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this trip back to India。 I loved her first book, and I am so happy to see that her stories are going to be a trilogy。 This continuation of the story of Lakshmi, Malik, Dr。 Jay, etc did not disappoint。 I loved seeing how these characters moved on in their new lives。 The new challenges they faced were quite interesting, and held my interest throughout。 Her writing provides a wonderful sensory experience。 A must read for those who liked the first book。 You really need to read them I really enjoyed this trip back to India。 I loved her first book, and I am so happy to see that her stories are going to be a trilogy。 This continuation of the story of Lakshmi, Malik, Dr。 Jay, etc did not disappoint。 I loved seeing how these characters moved on in their new lives。 The new challenges they faced were quite interesting, and held my interest throughout。 Her writing provides a wonderful sensory experience。 A must read for those who liked the first book。 You really need to read them in order。 。。。more

This book was a tender and engrossing follow-up to The Henna Artist, which I also thoroughly enjoyed。 By situating this book some distance in the future, Joshi has enough distance for her characters to have truly grown and evolved。 I loved seeing the characters that Lakshmi and Malik have become。 And the mystery/thriller elements of this story--the gold smuggling, the construction collapse--strike a good balance between exploring how easily corruption permeates the Indian business society as a w This book was a tender and engrossing follow-up to The Henna Artist, which I also thoroughly enjoyed。 By situating this book some distance in the future, Joshi has enough distance for her characters to have truly grown and evolved。 I loved seeing the characters that Lakshmi and Malik have become。 And the mystery/thriller elements of this story--the gold smuggling, the construction collapse--strike a good balance between exploring how easily corruption permeates the Indian business society as a whole, and the goodness and nuance of the individuals involved in addressing and confronting it。 I hope I can age as beautifully as Lakshmi does。 。。。more

Another solid novel from Alka Joshi, with beautiful writing and rich scenery。 I was absolutely enamoured by The Henna Artist and couldn’t wait to pick up this new release。 This story takes place 12 years after The Henna Artist ends and is kind of a check in with the characters。 Joshi fully transports you right back to 1960s Jaipur and Shimla and maintains the core essence of each character 12 years on。 I loved seeing Malik grown up and that his passion for truth, integrity and justice drove the Another solid novel from Alka Joshi, with beautiful writing and rich scenery。 I was absolutely enamoured by The Henna Artist and couldn’t wait to pick up this new release。 This story takes place 12 years after The Henna Artist ends and is kind of a check in with the characters。 Joshi fully transports you right back to 1960s Jaipur and Shimla and maintains the core essence of each character 12 years on。 I loved seeing Malik grown up and that his passion for truth, integrity and justice drove the novel。 However, the end fell a bit flat for me。 Things felt slightly too easy in the end。It’s hard for me not to compare this one to The Henna Artist because I loved that one so much, but I think this one is still amazing and definitely worth the read! 。。。more
